The Panthers (10–23, CUSA 2–10) late-game rally wasn’t enough as they fell to the Miami Hurricanes (25–8, ACC 6–6) 9–7. The two programs will meet once more later this season for a third and final matchup in May.
With the loss behind them, FIU now turns its attention to a weekend series against Kennesaw State (15–14, CUSA 6–6). The series opens Friday at 6 p.m. at FIU Baseball Stadium, continues Saturday at 5 p.m., and concludes Sunday at noon.
FIU holds a 1–4 record against Kennesaw State, with all meetings coming last season. Their lone win came in the first round of the CUSA Championship.
Despite the loss, FIU showed improvement from their previous matchup, putting up seven runs against a strong Miami team. Cole Cleveland got things started for the Panthers, launching a solo home run in the fourth inning — his third of the season.

In the ninth inning, FIU mounted a five-run rally. Cooper Rasmussen belted a two-run home run, his eighth of the season, cutting the deficit to 9–4. However, with the bases loaded, the Panthers were unable to capitalize and ultimately fell short.
On the mound, Rene Lastres made his first career start, allowing two runs over two innings. Four additional pitchers appeared in relief before the game was called, with Lastres taking his first loss of the season.
With conference play underway, the Panthers will look to build on their recent progress as they aim to climb the CUSA standings and position themselves for a postseason run.
