Balancing a heavy course load and extracurriculars can be a challenge for Florida International University students. But no one has to navigate it alone, thanks to the Center for Academic Success.

One of the center’s biggest strengths is its wide range of support, which aligns closely with FIU’s core curriculum. Students can find help for notoriously difficult subjects like mathematics, physics and chemistry.

The center also offers specialized support for reading and learning courses to help students build a solid academic foundation early in their college careers.

CfAS does more than just explain theories; it builds an interactive learning environment through:

  • Peer tutoring: One-on-one or group sessions where students get direct guidance from tutors who have already aced those exact courses.
  • Skill development: Workshops on study strategies, time management and exam preparation to help maximize results.
  • Peer Academic Tutoring Hive: A club for peer tutors and FIU students that fosters a supportive academic environment focused on sharing knowledge.

The center’s growth reflects the vision of dedicated educators like Dr. Vicenta Shepard. According to Shepard, the demand for out-of-class course preparation is consistently rising. Under her leadership, CfAS focuses not just on grades but on building confidence and independent thinking.

“More than just imparting knowledge, CfAS is a place that nurtures belief, allowing every student to realize they have the full capability to master their academic journey,” Shepard said.

This mindset helps CfAS maintain its quality of instruction and continue adding value to the FIU community.

Since its launch, the center has received overwhelmingly positive feedback. Many students have expressed gratitude for the timely support that helped them pass major exams with excellent results.

What truly sets CfAS apart is its sense of community. Studying alongside peer tutors helps remove the intimidation factor often felt in large lecture halls. At CfAS, every question is heard, every effort is valued, and individual success becomes a point of pride for the entire FIU student body.
