Deuxieme Maison (DM), home to the Honors College, is set for renovation or demolition as part of Florida International University’s five-year capital improvement plan.
Completed in 1973, the building is one of the five original structures on the Modesto A. Maidique Campus and the second-oldest building on campus.
“We’re focusing on students and classrooms at the same time, with the second-highest priority being the demolition and replacement of the DM building,” said CFO David H. Snider. “It is now included in our Capital Improvement Plan, as recommended by the State of Florida.”
This was outlined in FIU’s Educational Plant Survey, effective from July 1, 2026, to June 30, 2031, which lists Deuxieme Maison under both “Space to be Demolished” and “Space to be Renovated”. As studies and estimates are completed, a determination will be made regarding the cost-effectiveness of remodeling versus demolishing and rebuilding.
According to material presented during the Board of Trustees Full Board Meeting on July 30, 2025, the replacement building is meant, “both to satisfy university space needs and to facilitate the enrollment growth and programmatic development of Honors consistent with the mandate to become ‘the centerpiece of undergraduate educational excellence’ at Florida International University”.
The funding request of $98.9 million in Public Education Capital Outlay (PECO) funds for the DM project will be submitted to the Florida Legislature over the next four fiscal years.
Plans include administrative offices, student services offices, advising offices, support spaces, computer and innovation labs, and seminar/conference rooms.
The university has not announced a renovation or demolition timeline nor released architectural renderings for the replacement building.
