Loud music, packed stadium walkways, and long lines for free shirts took over campus on Monday night as FIU hosted its annual First Night celebration to kick off the Fall 2026 semester.
Thousands of students flooded into Pitbull Stadium on August 24, filling the bleachers and the turf after moving into residence halls over the weekend. As part of FIU’s Week of Welcome, the event served as a major meet-and-greet designed to help new students navigate campus life before the semester gets demanding.
For students experiencing campus life for the first time, the gathering offered a fast-paced introduction to FIU culture.
Turri Bell, a sophomore majoring in marketing, summed up the night in one word: “Amazing.”
Bell mentioned that while moving in was busy and crowded, things went smoothly with help from FIU staff.
Upperclassmen were also around the crowd, catching up with friends after summer and sharing advice with newer students.
“It feels strange knowing this is my last First Night,” said Manuel Almazo, a junior finance major. “My biggest advice to new students is to not just go straight back to your room after class. Join a club, talk to people, and show up to campus events like this.”
The night wrapped up shortly after 8 p.m. when the stadium lights went dark. Following a crowd countdown, a fireworks show lit up the sky over Pitbull Stadium, accompanied by students holding up their paws and cheering from the field.
With syllabus week underway, First Night gave students a chance to connect and build campus spirit before classes kick into full swing.
