An FIU student was arrested by FIUPD Sunday evening after he sent explicit images and organized a meetup with someone who was posing as a 15-year-old boy, according to an arrest report by FIU’s University Police Department.

Sophomore Jose Pablo Inostroza-Ibanez made contact with an individual through the dating app Grindr, who was posing as a 15-year-old boy, violating Grindr’s community guidelines that prohibit users from knowingly communicating with someone they believe to be a minor. The individual was an independent adult investigator who wasn’t working under FIUPD or other local law enforcement. According to Local 10 News, the investigator, who currently remains unidentified, reportedly traveled to the student’s on campus dormitory at University Apartments Building D while continuing to pose as a minor.

Inostroza-Ibanez gave the investigator detailed instructions on how to access his dormitory, and facilitated his arrival on campus with an Uber. The student also reportedly engaged in sexual conversation with the investigator, ultimately leading to a planned meetup, according to an arrest form provided by FIU.

FIUPD was contacted after the investigator arrived on campus. The investigator approached them and showed the communications which took place, leading them to arrest the student shortly after.

As of Tuesday evening, Inostroza-Ibanez is being held at the Metro West Detention Center, according to his Inmate Search on the Miami-Dade Corrections & Rehabilitation website.

He has been charged with two counts of harmful electronic transmission to a minor, one count of attempted lewd & lavicious assault on a minor, one count of traveling to meet a minor in or out of State, and one count of using an electronic device to solicit a child, according to his Inmate Search.

This is a developing story, and will be updated as more information becomes available.

FIUPD Chief Alexander Casas did not respond to a request for comment.
