Floating art, ribbon cutting to celebrate Earth Day

Hand-painted cubes with other garnishes floated around the lake behind the Green library on Tuesday, April 22.

These art installations, which will be floating décor for the lake until the end of April, were brought to the University by the PIAG Museum to commemorate Earth Day in conjunction with the palmetum ribbon cutting.


SJMC faculty win grant for sea level rise project

Four professors joined forces in the hopes of innovating journalism and civic engagement to address the rising concern about sea level rise in South Florida, and they just received the funds to do so over the next academic year.

School of Journalism and Mass Communication professors Robert Gutsche, Susan Jacobson, Kate MacMillin and Juliet Pinto won a $35,000 grant from the Online News Association Challenge Fund to test their proposed project titled, “Sea level rise in South Florida: How are waters affecting you?”


Roary celebrates birthday in new Panther Square

FIU’s mascot celebrated his birthday with about 150 students and staff members gathered in Panther Square at Biscayne Bay Campus.

The Student Government election results were announced at the start of the event, with Jazmin Felix as the new president and Camille Williams as vice president for 2014-2015.



CNN’s Candy Crowley At Biscayne Bay Campus

At the Student Government Association’s lecture on March 26, CNN’s chief political correspondent, Candy Crowley spoke to an audience of about 100 people, most of which were older members of the public who admired her show and work. Crowley talked about journalists’ responsibilities and the dangers of the Internet.



Women in sports journalism can feel like ‘crashing the frat party’

On the March 18 sports journalism panel for “Communication’s Week 2014,” Lindsay Casinelli, a Univision sportscaster and Michelle Kaufman, a Miami Herald sportswriter and a University of Miami adjunct professor, spoke up about the bias towards women in the business of sports journalism.
“The first thing that people see are my boobs, and I live with that,” said Casinelli.


SPC presents new movie series in BBC

Every semester the Student Programming Council of BBC brainstorm ideas for events that they think will allow students to take time to kick back after the stress of their classes. They have found that movies seem to do the trick.
