Voters at Modesto Maidique Campus have two presidential duos to pick from: Coalition’s Alexis Calatayud and Tiffany Roman and FIUNite’s Philip Koenig and Adriana McLamb. Jazmin Felix and Camille Williams are running unopposed at Biscayne Bay Campus.
Campaigning runs through April 2 and elections start April 1. For the full list of candidates, visit FIUSM.com. SGC-BBC’s list of candidates will not be available until March 27.
SGC-MMC Senate passed a bill this week that will create three weekly office hours for senators to meet with students starting fall 2014.
The Student Government Council Senate discussed internal changes at its meeting on February 24th, including a controversial proposal to create office hours for senators.
The Student Government Association will have budget hearings Feb. 6 and 7 with organizations seeking money from the activity and services fee — a $12.37 per credit hour charge that every student pays to the University. This year’s pot has not been determined yet, but last year’s reached $16.1 million.
The senate speaker said he is looking to pass more resolutions and bills that will benefit the student body compared to past legislation.
SGC-MMC President Liane Sippin has cut Students With A Goal and says the Senate has not lived up to expectations. She wants SGA to focus on mentoring its interns and says she is preparing for budgeting and elections.
The Student Government Association is in communication with the City of Miami to open a second road to access Biscayne Bay Campus.
SGA is working with House of Representatives, including Jose Felix Diaz, Jose Javier Rodriguez, Gwen Margolis, Jose Oliva and Cynthia Stafford to “bridge the gap between Bright Futures recipients and FAFSA recipients.”
