Finance and Tuition

Students using loans to pay for essentials

Approximately 39,000 students in the university received some type of financial aid to attend FIU, according to statistics from the Financial Aid Office. Senior Financial Aid Coordinator Fabiola Ortega said 30-35 percent of graduating students will be indebted. The average loan for an FIU student is between $15,000 to $20,000.

Students comparitive shop for semester’s textbooks

There are three popular vendors that FIU students use to obtain their books for their classes: Amazon, the popular online retailer; Chegg, the textbook rental and online student service organization; and the Florida International University Bookstore located in the Graham Center. Students surveyed at random were divided between the three as to which was the best option.

Departments compromise for work study employees

Recently, the Federal Work Study Program has suffered cuts and departments, including FIU Libraries and the Recreation Center, have felt the impact. Before the 2012-2013 school year, FWS covered 100 percent of the awards; but, each department of the University will now have to contribute 25 percent of these awards from their own budgets.
