Committed to guiding and supporting students with disabilities during their college experience, the Disabilities Resource Center at FIU “provides the resources to facilitate a smooth transition to university life,” as stated on their website.
“There was a very big stigma that if you were a DRC student you were just trying to gain the system … One of the major highlights of the last few years is really showing professors how accountable we hold our students and how accountable they want to be held,” said Stephen Loynaz, access consultant manager for the DRC.
The state of Florida has unanimously passed a law this summer changing the word “mental retardation” for “intellectual disability.” This means that government forms will now reflect such a shift.
