New Beer Science Lab introduced at Chaplin dinner

With the new Beer Science Lab—a state of the art brewing laboratory to accompany the recently constructed Restaurant Management Lab, the University is extending the culture of craft brewery in Miami.

On Thursday, April 3, the CSHTM celebrated the official opening of the Beer Science Lab with nearly a hundred guests, which included beer connoisseurs, FIU alumni and innovators from Gold Coast Beverage Distributors, to tour the new lab and sample food and beer.


New SGC-BBC president and vice president set objectives

The Student Government Association at Biscayne Bay Campus concluded the 2014 election last Thursday, announcing its new President, Jazmin Felix and Vice President, Camille Williams.

In their list of objectives, Felix and Williams hope to make BBC a more student-centered and unified campus through a collaborated effort between SGA, students and administrators.


New online master’s program arrives at SJMC fall 2014

Students from within and outside the School of Journalism and Mass Communication can now benefit from an online master’s program, post graduation.

The Global Strategic Communications online program is a master’s program for those looking to work in corporate level or managerial level positions in communications businesses.


Roary celebrates birthday in new Panther Square

FIU’s mascot celebrated his birthday with about 150 students and staff members gathered in Panther Square at Biscayne Bay Campus.

The Student Government election results were announced at the start of the event, with Jazmin Felix as the new president and Camille Williams as vice president for 2014-2015.


Lack of sleep affects brain cells, a study says

Students who put off sleep to cram for an exam may also be losing brain cells, according to a recent study published in The Journal of Neuroscience.

Researchers of the University of Pennsylvania found that mice experiencing extended wakefulness had a decline in locus ceruleus neurons, which are responsible for alertness, suggesting humans who stay up for long periods of time may be subjects to permanent brain cell damage.

“When you don’t sleep enough you deplete neurotransmitters,” said Dr. Liane Dornheim, staff psychologist for Counseling and Psychological Services, who specializes in Neuropsychology.


CNN’s Candy Crowley At Biscayne Bay Campus

At the Student Government Association’s lecture on March 26, CNN’s chief political correspondent, Candy Crowley spoke to an audience of about 100 people, most of which were older members of the public who admired her show and work. Crowley talked about journalists’ responsibilities and the dangers of the Internet.


Women find empowerment at conference

The Women’s Center celebrated the eighth annual “Women Who Lead Conference” at Biscayne Bay Campus with a day-long set of conferences to connect students with professional women who hold leadership positions.

This year’s keynote speaker was Donna Brazile, political strategist, among many other accomplishments.
