There aren’t many reasons to object, therefore, to FIU’s Global Indigenous Group’s recent petition to change the commemoration of Columbus Day. I don’t see why it follows that the day must be changed to “Indigenous People’s Day” as has been suggested, but at any rate this is a minor point; there are more important things to worry about than the things written on our calendars.
I strongly encourage every student at FIU to get involved in some club, activity, or sport.
As time goes on, I become more and more convinced that the Scholarship Aptitude Test is a weapon of mass destruction. Never mind the untold stress it inflicts on millions of high school students throughout the United States each year, the SAT helps create a culture of schooling that says students are only as capable as their test scores indicate, only as intelligent as their grade point averages suggest.
What people like Kaepernick, Beyoncé and many others believe is that the entire fabric of the United States is tainted by racism.
Any assessment of the status of race relations in America today will reveal a rather bleak reality. Nevertheless, the narrative of “systemic racism” is severely undermined by a dispassionate look at some facts and statistics.
