This past June marked the 40th anniversary of equality in sports. In June 1972, Title IX was signed into law by President Richard Nixon.
In mid-August, the Panthers were named favorites to win The Sun Belt Conference again in the preseason coaches poll. The next day, they made a statement that backed up the poll, shutting out Stetson 4-0 on Aug. 17 in front of 500 fans who braved the rain. Once the Panthers took the field, they never looked back.
After winning the Sun Belt conference last year, the FIU Panthers received five first-place votes. FIU also had three Panthers named in its women’s soccer All-Sun Belt preseason team: forward Chelsea Leiva, midfielder Nicole DiPerna, and goalkeeper Kaitlin Savage.
Playing for Harbor FC, Kaitlyn Savage jumped in the air to head the ball when her opponent hit her to throw off her balance. As she landed, she immediately knew something was wrong. Then she heard the crack. Savage crippled to the floor and cried out in pain. She had blown out her knee.
Even though FIU had the opportunity to continue their historic season, they could not seal another win as they lost to the Knights 2-0 in Orlando, FL. on Nov. 11.
