Along with her teammates and coaches, Ruele credits most of her success to her family. Specifically, her mother, who Naomi says, “sacrificed so much for me. I am so grateful for her and everything she has given me. And my brother who always supports me.”
Coming off the Stetson Invitational, one of the most challenging events in program history in which the team went winless, the Panthers were back at home hosting the fourth annual FIU Surf and Turf Invitational.
Orlando finished off the match with a comeback win in the final set over Stearns. The senior came back from a one-set deficit and won in a tiebreaker, 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (3), giving the Panthers a 5-2 win over the Bears.
The win also put FIU at 18-14 for the season and 4-2 in Conference USA. Their next task will be at home, where the Panthers are undefeated in conference play
“We are very loud and have very big hearts for the game,” Boulanger said. “I think that together we care so much that our love for the game just really gave us that will to win and succeed in our games.”
Nothing went right all season for this team, after a season opening win FIU stumbled the rest of the way, finishing with a 5-26 record. The worst in Conference USA and one of the worst years in the history of the program.
The sweep for the Panthers is the first sweep that FIU picked up against a Conference USA opponent since April 2014, when they swept North Texas in three games.
Friday, March 4, the University sent an email to all students concerning recent allegations of sexual misconduct on the behalf of Head Coach Marlin Chinn. While the email touts the University’s responsibility to students, faculty and staff, the content fails to live up to said responsibility.
The Panthers took their 11-5 record on the road for the first time all season, and a short trip took them to Gainesville as they were set to be competing in the UF invitational, hosted by the University of Florida.
The Panthers (9-1) defeated Conference USA rival Marshall, 4-3, Friday, March 4, and beat Virginia Commonwealth University, 6-1, Saturday, March 5.
