The Hispanic community isn’t the punchline to your “jokes”

Kailey Krantz | Staff Writer Even if it’s no longer surprising, I’m tired of Republicans using the Hispanic community as the punchline to a bad joke. At former president Donald Trump’s rally in Madison Square Garden this past Sunday, the speakers— that his campaign administration picked out— decided to market themselves with blatant racism and […]

Latinx, Hispanic And The Difference Between Race And Ethnicity

Gabriela Enamorado/Staff Writer Filling out any paperwork can be confusing as a Latinx. You mark your ethnicity as “Hispanic/Latino” and then they ask you for your race. You think “wait, isn’t my race Hispanic?” This is a common misconception. The terms “Hispanic” and “Latinx” refer to an ethnicity, not a race. Once we recognize this, […]

Muriel Almeida/Contributing Writer   After reshaping the Spanish Heritage Language program at the University, Dr. Marisa Filgueras-Gomez an Assistant Professor of Spanish Applied Linguistics, is bringing students closer to their Hispanic roots. Hispanic women shouldn’t be oversexualized

Brea Jones/ Staff Writer In today’s society, men oversexualize women for specific stereotypical characteristics or traits. For white women it’s obedience, for black women its sex and for Hispanic women, it’s their attitudes. Hispanic women are often thought of as being “spicy” or sassy because of the way they are portrayed in the media. This […]

Asking questions may lead to new discoveries about yourself

Uzi Darwiche/ Contributing Writer May I tell you a secret? It’s one few people have heard but is rooted in history. Thousands of Hispanics are discovering a hidden past to their families — a rich heritage which was ripped away through the traumas of generations passed. While the Hispanic community hails from a diverse background […]

A take on ‘the world’s most famous Cuban restaurant’

Barbara Carbonell / Contributing Writer In my experience, only a handful of places in Miami can be found buzzing with positive and welcoming energy halfway through a Monday. Recently, I’ve discovered Versailles Restaurant to be one of those few places. From local residents out on their lunch break to tourists just visiting Miami, everyone seems […]

Ozuna brings deeper meaning to reggaeton

Andrea Diaz-Ariza / Contributing Writer On Aug. 25, 2017, Ozuna released his debut album “Odisea,” which has taken the #1 spot on the Billboard Latin Albums. In many ways, releasing an album and opening track titled Odisea seems appropriate for a first album. The title track seems to carry a double meaning, introducing the listener […]

Disney has failed Hispanics

Last year, Disney debuted their first Hispanic princess, Elena of Avalor. As Avalor’s princess, she is a skilled sword-fighter, has magical powers and does not have a love interest. She is a mixture of different Hispanic heritages, cultures and legends. She sounds fascinating, except, Disney has belittled and discriminated against her.
