Best Lunch Breaks for BBC Students at Oishi Thai

By Maria Gabriela Bermudez / Contributing Writer In a strip mall just a few minutes east of Biscayne Bay Campus on Biscayne Boulevard is what just might be the best sushi and Thai food in North Miami. Deceiving to the eye from the outside, Oishi Thai is a seemingly hole-in-the-wall restaurant that, once inside, […]

EDITORIAL: Occupy FIU must reevaluate its demonstration methods

We understand that FIU is still a young university that lacks a lengthy history of campus activism. It is learning how to react to a new generation of students who are witnessing a unique social movement in other cities and university campuses that does not seem to be stopping anytime soon. We all need to get use to the soapbox. But let’s make sure it’s okay to stand on it first.

EDITORIAL: Safety overrides nature in construction of new entrance

Anthony Cave quoted an opponent of the second entrance, asking, “Why don’t you build it in your backyard?” The Beacon notes we are building it in our backyard. Another person, booing the proposal, asked, “What about our children?” Because the University, Alonzo and Tracy Mourning Senior High School and the David Lawrence K-8 Center all share only one entrance and one exit, the construction of a second pathway is not just more convenient, but does, indeed consider the safety of the children.

The Beacon thinks it is imperative that SGC-BBC explain the reasoning behind both decisions.

Projected to officially launch in Fall 2012, MyMajor is a program which matches students’ goals and interests with potential majors. Furthermore, MyMajor offers students academic advising and planning. Students also gain acceptance into the school of their interest, complete with a plan the day they enter the University.

EDITORIAL: Work Study Solution is Problematic

This solution is problematic for several reasons: it burdens departments, deflects responsibility, and does not encourage accountability for ensuring this mistake does not happen again. Furthermore, having the departments revamp and modify their already existing budget to compensate for an overestimation is not a solution; it is a passing of the buck and a passing of the responsibility to compensate and be accountable for their mistake.

EDITORIAL: New York Times Readership Program Needs Overhaul

The Beacon feels that there should be fundamental changes to The New York Times Readership program; it is a service that not all students benefit from but that all students pay for.

EDITORIAL: LGBT outreach lacking, improvement necessary

The Beacon thinks that the University needs to take the necessary initiatives to improve its scores, essentially improving an LGBT student’s experience at the University
