Four hours and 20 minutes: that’s how long the football war between the Akron Zips and the FIU Panthers took to be decided.
I remember when I first checked the lineups for the first FIU volleyball game on Aug. 24 against University of Florida. When I was curious to see who head coach Trevor Theroulde put into the lineup, there was one glaring omission: the best player on the team was not starting.
FIU was eased into conference play against a slumping Owls club with 2-0 victory against FAU on March 21. The Panthers played a FAU squad that had lost nine of their last 13 games. The team received a stellar performance from ace Mariah Dawson. Dawson gave her bullpen a rest, pitching a complete game allowing just two hits to go with a season-high 12 strikeouts.
