Editorial: Modesto Maidique’s comments are not without basis

In an op-ed submitted to the Miami Herald by former FIU president and business professor, Modesto Maidique, FIU’s image and its FIUBeyondPossible2020 strategy were looked at with a critical eye. Maidique urged the University to “take the painful step of reducing freshmen enrollment or forget becoming a strong research university.”


Miami is a breeding ground for political corruption

Super PACs act as a vehicle for contributions like these and we have seen no shortage of this and other blatant disregard for the laws that keep the campaign financing process legitimate. The worst part is that all of this shady transferring of money has been extremely prevalent in Miami and the rest of Florida, with at least three instances occurring from March onward.




Golden Panthers defeated in weather-shortened opener

The Golden Panthers’ women’s swimming and diving team opened up the 2011-2012 season at home with a 68-44 defeat at the Bay Vista Aquatics Complex to Florida Gulf Coast University on Sept. 30. The dual meet was ended early due to rain and lightning in the area. Both teams were only able to complete six events before the meet was called.
