The bubble we live in makes it almost impossible for us to consider that FIU’s expansion to the fairgrounds might not be as beneficial to the Miami-Dade and University communities as it seems.

The 64 acres of Miami-Dade’s Tamiami Park that is at the heart of a dispute between the University and the Miami Dade Youth Fair is the planned site of a new engineering center, Rosenberg announced at the State of the University Address held Monday, April 11.
“I’ll say this to the president of the fair, or to the Miami Dade commissioners but when you think about the long term success and advancement of the community, education is the number one thing, and that will not come through the Youth Fair in the same level that FIU can provide it. I think compromise means we have to work to see what we can do to be better for our community. And the community has spoken loud and clear about what they want,” said Collazo.
FIU has been looking to expand its MMC campus into the Tamiami Park Fairgrounds, on the condition that the institution finds a replacement venue to host the fixture, which moved adjacent to FIU in 1972. FIU must also reimburse the fair for its infrastructural investment at its current location.
Plans regarding student health requirements at the University and decisions on the fairgrounds expansion were brought forward on the Sept. 10 Board of Trustees meetings.
After years of planning, the University will take their hopes for expansion into the hands of Miami-Dade County voters.
The University received $10 million from the state to help move the Youth Fair, but a poll shows mixed feelings among voters.
