Football player killed on campus

FIU student and Golden Panther running back Kendall Berry was stabbed and killed at Modesto Maidique Campus on March 25.
Berry, a 22 year old junior, was involved dispute at 9 p.m. in front of the University Recreation Center with the suspect. According to Miami-Dade Police spokesman Javier Baez, the dispute “escalated” and Berry was stabbed with an unknown weapon.
Baez added that Berry died en route to the hospital.
Details on the suspect are unclear at the time and no suspects are currently in custody as the police are in the preliminary stages of the investigation, according to University Public Safety Spokesman Lt. Rick Torres.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to Kendall’s family,” said FIU President Mark B. Rosenberg in a written statement. “We are here to support them and our entire university community as all of us come to terms with this tragedy.”
The statement added that “at this time, police believe there is no immediate threat to the university community.”
Julie Berg, senior associate athletic director, said she was contacted by Athletics and came quickly to the scene. Berg added that the entire department was very sad.
“We’re like a family and we lost one of ours tonight,” Berg said.
