Radiate FM brings local musicians to the Everglades

Radiate FM and three of Miami’s indie folk names are converging this Saturday for “Eat. Sleep. Folk.,” Radiate’s response to the more posh Winter Music Conference shows going on around Miami.
This will mark the first Radiate FM-sponsored concert in over a year, and the first under the station’s new promotion director, Mariana Ochoa.
The lineup will feature Sirens and Sealions, Evan Mui and Sam Friend.
In the past, the station has hosted many different music oriented productions and CD release parties for bands like Animal Collective and Black Moth Super Rainbow. They are planning to make shows like this monthly with more local and national bands.
“It’s a prologue to what’s coming next, and people should watch out because Radiate FM is about to blow up,” said Anna Miorelli, a sophomore majoring in architecture who DJs under the name DJ Neauvo.
The concert will be held down at the Everglades International Hostel on 20 SW 2nd Ave, in Florida City. Entrance is free and everyone is invited.
Also, they will be giving away tickets to a Band of Horses concert.
They are hoping to get the station’s name out and rally some support while providing students and locals a chance to experience
some new music.
At the hostel, they will be selling vegan
goods like black bean burgers and vegan cookies.
Performers will be set against a beautiful backdrop outside the hostel next to a waterfall that you can jump into – in fact, it’s encouraged.
“I’m really excited about the waterfall, that and music equals a good time,” said DJ Roshana (Gossoff), a junior majoring in public relations who also DJs at Radiate FM.
Evan Mui, originally from New York, plays mostly acoustic, though recently he has been formulating some full band songs which you can probably expect this Saturday.
Sam Friend, whose folk inspired music brings together fans of The Shins, also takes some of its muse from Bob Dylan.
Finally, Sirens and Sealions, a band from Miami, recently played a packed show at Books and Books.
“They’re great music to lounge around … and especially perfect for impressing your girlfriend with sensitive lyrics and perfect harmonies,” said Krista Lopez, a sophomore majoring in anthropology who is also a DJ at Radiate FM and is promoting the event.
The hostel, tucked away down in Florida City, will be offering rooms for FIU students at only $22 a night, a discounted price.
Though the bands don’t start till 9 p.m., event organizers don’t see a problem with showing up a bit earlier and hanging out near the waterfall before the show starts.
And, if anyone decides to stay over, there’s more to do in the morning. Kayaks are available for renting to take on trips in the Everglades and bikes are on hand for renting too. “Eat. Sleep. Folk.” is exactly what its name suggests.
