Captivated by the story of a man who was dedicated to informing the world of an important cause, Samuel G. Freedman and Kerry Donahue set out on a journey to tell the incredible story of journalist, Jeffrey Schmalz. AIDS may have taken Schmalz in the end, but with his death, came the birth of a new journalism.
“It’s important to bring young readers, both straight and gay, back to that time period and also be reminded of how many exceptionally talented, exceptionally gifted, exceptionally productive people – members of the media, the arts and business, all aspects of society – lost their lives to this disease at incredibly young ages,” said Freedman.
The University celebrates World AIDS Day Tuesday, Dec. 1 at the Biscayne Bay Campus Panther Square.
The Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration offered a grant to FIU-BRIDGE, one that would go towards a project promoting health as well as substance abuse, HIV and Hepatitis C prevention.
With World AIDS Day coming up on Monday, Dec. 1, the FIU Wellness Center is putting together one of their famous Random Acts of Wellness days.
SHS will be hosting a resource fair with free HIV testing in the ballrooms at Biscayne Bay Campus on Dec. 3 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will also be a tabling event outside of Green Library at Modesto Maidique Campus on Dec. 3 from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
