FIU’s Students Working for Equal Rights celebrated becoming Florida’s first public college to offer an out-of-state tuition waiver for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals students.
While the University became the first public institution in Florida to offer a non-resident tuition waiver to undocumented students during Fall 2013, SB 1400 makes this policy a statewide standard as of July 1, 2014.
Although Miami Dade College and FIU remain the only educational institutions in the state that waive out-of-state tuition fees for undocumented students, FIU only does so for those eligible for DACA, a fact that has led state government officials to tackle opposition in an effort to secure tuition equity for all undocumented students.
Despite the doors that have been opened by the tuition waiver for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals students, the battle for tuition equity is still being fought.
