What comes after “Game of Thrones”?

Rashawn Raysor/Staff Writer

Winter is now closer than its ever been.

On Sunday, April 14, the eighth and final season of HBO’s “Game of Thrones” will premiere, and with the final season, months away plenty of questions of what will happen and how the show will end are arising.

With several fan theories circulating online, there are bound to be a different set of questions being asked: What’s next for the show’s creators? What does HBO plan to develop to replace their titanic fantasy epic of a show?

There are several projects in development in the wake of the end of “Game of Thrones.” HBO itself has revealed that there are plans to produce a series of “Game of Thrones” prequels and spin-offs. Each potential series has a different creator partnering with George R.R. Martin. So far there is a list of confirmed cast members for a pilot of one of the spin-offs including standout actors such as Naomi Watts, Jamie Campbell Bower, Naomi Ackie, Ivanno Jeremiah and Denise Gough.

The series showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss also have plans for future projects. Perhaps the most notable of them being a new series for HBO called “Confederate,” a story set in an alternate timeline where the Confederacy successfully seceded from the Union and would chart the events leading up to the third civil war and follow freedom fighters, slave hunters, abolitionists and politicians.

There is a bit of uncertainty surrounding the show’s development as the announcement was followed by heavy controversy. Various activists such as April Reign, creator of #OscarsSoWhite, took to Twitter to criticize the planned HBO series. Many activists and critics thought the show could serve as a form of wish fulfillment to many white supremacists and neo-confederates.

Others felt the idea of the series to be in poor taste that the show would be a sick fantasy rather than an interesting dive into the plight of African Americans during that time. As of now, it’s unknown if the series will continue development.

Aside from the civil war escapades, Benioff and Weiss are slated to write and produce a new series of Star Wars films for Disney once “Game of Thrones”  is completed.

As for Martin, the esteemed author is working on numerous things. For one, he still has yet to complete the next book in the Song of Ice and Fire series. There are likely more books to come before the series is complete, so fans will surely have plenty of reading to do.

In terms of television projects, Martin will be working on the “Game of Thrones” spin-offs. He also revealed at the 70th Primetime Emmy Awards that he’s working with fellow writer Nnedi Okorafor, a Nigerian-American writer whose works encompass African-futurism, science fiction and fantasy, on an adaptation of her novel, “Who Fears Death,” for HBO. He is to serve as executive producer on the series.

Her novel “Who Fears Death” is set in post-apocalyptic Sudan and tells the tale of a young girl who travels the land to defeat her sorcerer father. It explores themes of sexism, colorism, ethnic cleansing, weaponized rape, discrimination. Themes worthy of a successor to the giant television experience of GOT. Fans can rest assured there are plenty of new projects to look forward to in the future.
