The night before Election Day, Former President Barack Obama visited FIU as part of Biden’s final campaign efforts.

Some of the main issues covered immigration, COVID-19, and the Affordable Care Act (ACA). This is the second visit Obama has done at FIU as he spoke last week at the Biscayne Bay Campus endorsing former Vice President Joe Biden.

The private drive-in mobilization rally, organized by Biden for President, was open to campaign contributors and volunteers. Over two hundred people were in attendance.

The event hosted speakers including democratic hispanic senators, Miami-Dade and Broward County mayors, and field organizers.

Daniella Cava, Miami-Dade County mayoral candidate emphasized the importance of having immigrant voices heard in this election.

“You can tell [those who haven’t voted] that so many people want to vote and can’t,” said Cava. “They must vote for all [immigrants].”

Two of the highly anticipated speakers included Latin pop and reggaeton artist Luis Fonsi and Obama.

“Let’s pray for a president that will treat us with respect, one that cares about the people in this country and recognizes the contributions that each of us make,” said Fonsi.

Leading up to Obama’s entrance, the audience danced to hip-hop and reggaeton while discussing their concerns with local politicians.

As Obama walked onto the stage, the audience chanted, “DNC [Democratic National Committee],” and “Vote for Biden.”

He emphasized Americans should not have to constantly think about a president’s motives.

“You’ll be able to go about your lives knowing [that] Biden is doing his job,” said Obama.

He compared Trump’s efforts to relieve COVID-19 to Biden’s plans if chosen as president. With this, he emphasized that Biden plans to make COVID-19 testing and the future vaccine free for all Americans.

“When there’s a virus coming, the president cannot be awol,” he said.

Obama pointed out that the goal of his speech was to encourage the Miami community to vote for Biden, especially those who don’t feel that their vote will count.

“Voting is not about making things perfect,” he said. “It’s about making things better.”
