After qualifying for the East Regional with seven competitors, FIU is left with four heading to the 2012 Outdoor Track & Field National Championship. The 4×100 meter relay team qualified by running 45.05 and placing 11th out of 24 teams that competed. This will be the first time ever that an FIU women’s relay team will be competing at the national championship.

“We are really excited for the 4×100 relay team on their accomplishment,” FIU track and field coach Eric Campbell said. “For them to show that FIU has one of the best 4×100 relay teams in the country makes us extremely proud and we’re eager to see them showcase their talents at the national championship.”

The four members of the team, Marissa McElveen, Lakeisha Kelley, Carla-Kay Mills and T’Keyah Dumoy headed into the East Regional as the number eight team from qualifying.

FIU finished just five tenths of a second from tenth place, where Charlotte finished with a time of 45.00. Finishing first was Louisiana State University with a time of 43.26 and second was Ohio State with a time of  43.98. Fellow Sun Belt qualifier, Middle Tennessee, placed eighth, running a 44.89.

The Panthers wil now prepare for the National Championship on June 9 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa.
