FIU falls to North Florida

The FIU men’s soccer team (2-4-0) fell to the undefeated Osprey (4-0-1), by a score of 1-0, despite out-shooting North Florida 23-9, on Friday night in FIU’s home opener at the FIU Soccer Stadium.

“It came out of nowhere we started off a good had a couple chances then they scored a goal totally unexpected.” Said Junior Forward Quentin Albrecht. “I think it got a little in our heads but we need to fight through, that’s not an excuse we had many chances”

The Panthers came out of the gates firing; attempting 10 shots in the first period, in retrospect North Florida only took 9 shots the entire game. However, FIU got down in this game fairly quick, as Pedro Carneiro was able to score in the 18th minute off a missed shot by teammate Jon-Michael Vieira.

“7-23 shots were on goal that’s not good enough.” said Head Coach Ken Arena “It’s the hardest sport in the world to score in. There’s a reason why they say ‘the game is cruel’ we are going to forget about this game. We lost this game but we were clearly the better team.”

FIU, which dominated the ball in the second period, had more than enough opportunities to score as they out-shot North Florida 13-4. Many of the Panthers attempts were decent looks; unfortunately, only 4 were on goal and none were actual goals. Which led to a 1-0 defeat for the Panthers.

In spite of the fact that FIU is on its first losing streak of the season and has only managed one goal in the last two contests, Coach Arena remains confident in his team.

“I am confident in this team.” said Arena. “Obviously with the display you saw we are a very good team. I think we could beat anyone.”

The Panthers will attempt to snap their two game losing streak against the (1-3-1) Jacksonville Dolphin, on Sunday, September 22 at the FIU Soccer Stadium. The game is set to start at 6:00 p.m.
