Update 4:07 p.m.:

Miami-Dade Police have confirmed that the deceased is “not affiliated with nor a student” at FIU.

No further details were available regarding the body at this time.

Original Story:

A body was found floating in the lake this morning in front of the Biscayne Bay Campus.

Around 8 a.m. on Tuesday, May 7, students at BBC reported seeing a body in the lake while riding the shuttle headed to the Modesto Maidique Campus.

“The drivers stopped and got off the shuttle to look at something in the pond, and everyone started looking out the window,” said senior pre-dental student John Habib. “When I put on my glasses and looked out, I saw blue shorts and legs floating in the water.”

An email from University External Relations sent at around 9 a.m. confirmed the presence of the body and warned about “heightened” police activity on campus from FIUPD and the Miami-Dade Police Department.

The body was pulled out of the lake around 10 a.m. and examined by Miami-Dade homicide detectives. The deceased was determined to be male. According to the statement by FIU, it was not suspected to belong to an FIU student or member of the University community.

FIUPD Public Information Officer Delrish Moss told Student Media that MDPD would be handling the investigation because the University police do not handle death cases.

This is the second time in a decade that a dead body has been found on an FIU campus. In 2011, the body of Lisbel Garcia was found in the Red Parking Garage on MMC and was also investigated by MDPD.
