After President Joe Biden passed new expansions to Title IX, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis accused Biden of “injecting gender ideology into education” in a statement on X and vowed not to comply.

Title IX is a law that was enacted in 1972 that banned the discrimination of gender within federally funded education establishments, targeting sexual misconduct against women at schools.

Since then, some expansions for Title IX have been passed – one of them was recently passed by President Biden’s administration, reversing changes by former President Donald Trump’s Title IX expansions

Trump’s expansion of Title IX was notorious for making the process of convicting alleged harassers difficult and raising the standard for evidence. Supporters of this expansion were glad to see a strengthening in this due process.

Effective Aug. 1st, new rules for Title IX regarding sexual harassment state that investigations can be conducted for incidents outside campus, not requiring victims to attend in-person cross-examinations or live hearings, more flexibility to how schools conduct investigations, and a lower standard for evidence.

Title IX also emphasizes federally protecting LGBTQIA+ students from gender identity or sexual orientation based harassment, bringing the protection of queer students into Title IX for the first time.

On brand with DeSantis’ ‘war on woke’, he made a video statement on X (formerly known as Twitter) stating that he will not comply with President Biden’s Title IX expansion.

“We are not going to let Joe Biden abuse his constitutional authority to try to impose these policies on us here in Florida. We stand with opportunities, we are not going to let Biden get away with it. We will not comply,” said DeSantis on X.

DeSantis received overwhelming support on X with over 2,000 comments thanking him for his leadership and all-around positive feedback.

DeSantis stands on the idea that President Biden has threatened women’s rights by allowing transgender women to be treated equally to cis-gendered women, as this reasoning can be seen through his ban on transgendered women playing on women’s teams for school sports.

“We are not going to let Joe Biden try to inject men into women’s activities,” said Gov. DeSantis in his video statement.

Despite no specific mention of transgender students involved in sports or activities in President Biden’s Title IX expansion, the addition of federally protecting queer students through Title IX could serve as a precursor to solidifying transgender protection across the US.
