Rihanna releases ‘Work’ on the heels of her world tour

By Darius Dupins/Staff Writer

‘Work’ seems to be the official first single from Rihanna’s forthcoming album, Anti. This breezy track features her one time fling and Canadian, rapper heartthrob, Drake. They’ve slayed the charts twice before with Drake’s “Take Care” and 2010’s “What’s my name?”

“Work, work, work, work, work,” Rihanna woozingly croons over an understated synth backing track on her new single, ‘Work’. It seems as the star’s long awaited new album, Anti is well on its way, Or is it?

In the last year Rihanna has released three test singles. A modest, epic piano ballad “American Oxygen,” then there was the alcohol laden confession on “FourFiveSeconds,” featuring Paul McCartney and Kanye West. Followed by the universal revenge anthem, “Bitch Better Have My Money.” With the release of three singles and even a reveal for the album’s artwork, fans and critics were still left without an official release date for Anti.

The track was produced by Boi-1da, Vinylz and Sevn Thomas. Creeping synths compliment Rihanna’s dizzying words as she repeats: work, turn, dirt and love. Drake does Drake very well: sensitive, self-aware with tinge of corny. The Barbadian singer went back to her Music of the Sun days that include mature lyrical content which makes this new, stark single more of an underground hit than a Pop and R&B crossover chart-topper.

On Monday, Rihanna tweeted a photo of herself with the caption, “Listening to ANTI,” implying the album is complete after months of teasing that included an interactive website and seven-part promotion for Samsung to support her album and world tour.

A month before the Rated R singer kicks off her world tour in San Diego, CA, and touching down in Miami at the American Airlines Arena on March 15, it’s a relief fans were treated to a new, unadulterated single.
