Amber Rose’s feminism continues to shock world

While the body-positivity movement is a breath of fresh air, it’s a reminder to all women that they should be proud of who they are and how they look. Amber Rose is not one to shy away from controversy, so it’s no secret that she often sparks up a debate. Challenging everyone’s motives and beliefs one action at a time, Rose is committed to promoting the idea that all women have agency over their own bodies.

Rose’s most recent action created a frenzy on social media because she posted a bottomless photo showing her pubic hair to promote her third annual SlutWalk. The mission was to break down gender stereotypes and double standards and to educate and empower women in a safe environment.

Instagram took the photo down, but her followers were quick to snapshot the post before its removal. The intention behind the post was to promote female empowerment, and it’s clear that Rose is not shy about owning her sexuality.

This raises awareness of the many taboos still prevalent in society such as how it’s wrong for women to have hair anywhere on their bodies. Soon enough fans started the #AmberRoseChallenge on behalf of feminism, body positivity and not conforming to the norms of society about what women should wear and where they should shave.

“Society wants you to think you have to be clean, you have to be shaved, but every human,  every mammal has hair,” said Savanna Melchor, a freshman majoring in liberal arts and minoring in biology.

“Why are you depressed about it if you know it’s supposed to be there?” said Daybe Eugene, a freshman majoring in marketing. “No matter what, you’re upset about the picture, so it doesn’t matter.”

Personally, I am supportive of Rose because she doesn’t let society tell her how to live her life. There’s power in freedom and there’s power when you have status.

“It just feels like she’s doing too much,” said Melchor. “I feel like you shouldn’t be posting pictures like that on social media, but when it comes to you being naked, little girls look up to that. A lot of people are impressionable.”

Some say it was distasteful, and to a certain extent, I agree. You don’t need to show your body to know your worth. But social media is a world where you are going to run into things you don’t want to see.

Rose is a sex symbol and known for dressing risque and speaking her mind freely. The fact that a sex symbol doesn’t conform to society speaks volumes. She’s just showing her support in a way most wouldn’t. A celebrity has a lot power, but we can’t tell them what to do with it.  We have one life and the least we can do is try to change the image that women are not meant to be a fabric of society.

“It’s whatever. It’s on her personal page she can do whatever she wants with it. You can avoid the picture if you want to,” Eugene said.

Kervin Vancol, a senior majoring in public administration, agreed, saying, “It’s whatever, just move on.”

Rose will continue to shock fans and viewers around the world, and whether we like it or not, this is her form of promoting feminism. If it’s causing a controversy, it must be worthwhile to have a debate about it. Body positivity is no easy task because of standards put by society, which results into almost having no sense of who you are. You wear a mask for so long you forget who you are. Once you own who you are, you become the best version of you.
