The SGC-MMC senate voted this Monday to move forward with an impeachment trial for comptroller Carolina Gonzalez.

The decision comes two weeks after Gonzalez was summoned before senate for questioning after it was revealed she signed a contract guaranteeing herself and others paid positions in Student Government.

In that hearing, senators intensely questioned Gonzalez about her actions and possible consequences.

The following week in senate, Gonzalez suggested that a possible punishment could be forfeiting her paycheck to the food pantry on campus.

Senators were not sold on that idea.

In the following senate meeting, housing senator Victoria Larson made the motion to move towards an impeachment trial citing violations of ethics code section I, K and P.

Larsen spoke to Student Media after the senate meeting about why she made the motion instead of allowing Gonzalez to be punished financially.

“We need to set a standard in SGA of the kind of behavior that is acceptable, and if we let students get away with acts like that then what does that really say about SGA?” said Larsen. “I feel like to let someone do something like that just says ‘oh it’s fine’ and next year  you can just pay your way through.”

Gonzalez did not respond for comment by press time Friday, Oct. 19.

The trial will be held in the MMC senate on Monday, Oct. 29.
