There has been a lack of positive queer portrayal in children’s media for a long time.
The public is always wondering what the media’s effect on children is; a prominent concern because children are the indicators of changing times. What we influence them with can foretell how a certain future era or generation is going to play out.
Since her debut in March 1959, Barbie has experienced some significant changes to her blonde hair, blue eyed and petite physique. After a series of changes which included broadening the list of available eye colors, skin tones and hairstyles, Mattel has announced a new line of Barbie dolls that will now include four different body types.
Overwhelmed by the growing population, the One-Child Policy was implemented in the late 1970’s, limiting couples to only having one child. Disobeying this law led to harsh consequences, especially for women.
We waited impatiently to be in high school, then to become legal adults, graduate and go on to a university. Now we’re impatient to be 21, to get an internship as early as possible, graduate as quickly as we can then find a job that will lead to another job. It never stops.
