July 12: Fee Raises, Model U.N. and Wynwood Pride

This week on The Golden Hour we talked about rising transportation fees, athletic fees for online students, FIU’s Model UN team victory and Wynwood PRIDE.

Beginning Fall, online students can expect to be charged an athletic fee for the first time. We discuss why this fee will be implemented and SGA involvement with PantherNOW reporter, Joshua Ceballos and opinion director Gabrialla Pinos.

The transportation access fee will also be raised by 5% to fully subsidize rides to and from Biscayne Bay campus on the Golden Panther express, and we talked to assistant news director, Elizabeth Fernandez who has been reporting on the fee raise over the summer semester.

Alexander Rubido, a member of the Model United Nation team discussed how they defeated Ivy League schools, the perks of being part of Model United Nations and how to get involved. He gives us an insider perspective on what a typical practice looks like, how competitions and scoring works, and also what this ranking means for FIU.

Wynwood Pride took place during Pride month and opinion director Gabriella Pinos sat down with opinion writer Will Sadler to talk about corporate involvement in Wynwood’s 3-day Pride festival, “rainbow capitalism” and the LGBTQ community.
