After almost three weeks of court deliberations, former Minneapolis officer Derek Chauvin was found guilty on all three charges; second-degree murder, third-degree murder and manslaughter in the death of George Floyd.

“With the verdict in the Derek Chauvin case expected this afternoon, we want to acknowledge the heightened level of anxiety and anticipation, particularly given the recent mass killings and other senseless acts of violence in our country,” stated an email sent out by FIU President Mark B. Rosenberg and El pagnier Kay “Ek” Hudson, senior vice president of Human Resources and vice provost of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

The 12-member jury unanimously found Chauvin to guilty followed by three weeks of testimony from 45 witnesses, which included bystanders, police officers, and medical experts.

“We also know that some members of our university community may want to make their feelings heard by participating in public events or demonstrations,” said Rosenberg in the email. “As you determine your level of engagement, we encourage you to be safe and engage peacefully in whatever way you choose to make your feelings known.”
