Panthers end championship in top three

The Panther’s track and field team finished their indoor league competing in the C-USA Indoor Championship in Birmingham, Ala.  on February 26th. Despite University Texas of El Paso winning overall on the women’s and Western Kentucky University winning it all on the men’s side, five athletes for FIU finished in the top three and earning two bronze medals and three silver medals on Thursday after team finished in ninth overall.

Starting with the men, the Panthers earned two second place finishes and third place result. On the 60-meter dash, redshirt junior Alton Eliphar, one one-hundredth of a second away, ran a school-record time of 6.71 seconds earning him a silver medal. Senior Luka Mustafic also earned a silver medal in the shot put, throwing 17.06 meters.

In the heptathlon, senior Chris Sullivan set a school record, posting 4,856 points, which earned him a bronze medal. In the shot put, he threw 13.27 meters, and in the high jump, he recorded 1.94. Sullivan also succeeded in the 1,000-meter run. He finished with the time of 2:45.06.

On the women’s side, senior Cam’ree Jackson ran a personal best in the 60-meter dash. She recorded with the time of 7.49 seconds. With that time, the Miramar native received a bronze medal. In the high jump, freshman Clarrissa Cutliff recorded a 1.70 meter in the high jump. With that result, Cutliff received a bronze medal.

With the end of the indoor league, the Panthers will have a whole week off before the outdoor season begins. Their two meets will be at University of Miami in Coral Gables, FL. The first meet will be the Hurricane Invitational beginning on March 19th
