Panthers take another loss in Conference USA

Alex Toledo // Contributing Writer

In their first game back after the effects of last week’s Hurricane Matthew, the Panthers Volleyball team lost 0-3 at home to the Rice Owls, (22-25, 23-25, 24-26). The team now stands at 7-11 for the season and a disappointing 1-3 in Conference USA play.

Although it was a close game, with every last set coming down to the wire, the Panthers could not pull out a win against Rice, (12-7 on the season, 4-0 in C-USA), on Sunday afternoon. The majority of each set seemed to tell the same story: the Panthers came out with exceptional energy but couldn’t execute toward the end of sets, including the final set where the Panthers made a late push on the Owls, leading the entire way, but the Owls won in the end.

In what proved to be more of a balanced attack for the Panthers, senior Katie Hogan finished with 13 kills, two digs and an ace as FIU’s top performer, while junior Tia Clay added in 10 kills, junior Tajia Thomas and freshman Sophia Sires both contributed nine kills, and junior Brianna Gogins put in five kills. FIU led in points, kills and assists for the match.

The team is set to play the Marshall Thundering Herd Tuesday, Oct. 11 in Huntington, West Virginia. Afterwards, the team will head to Charlotte, North Carolina, to play the Charlotte 49ers on Oct. 14 and then to Bowling Green, Kentucky, to face off against the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers.
