Elections for the Student Government Council at the Modesto Maidique campus are taking place in April and election officials are hosting a series of meetings throughout the semester to help students understand the student government and the election process better.

“Last year we jumped right into informational sessions and people didn’t really know what they got into so that led to a lot of people quitting in the fall,” said SGC-MMC elections commissioner Labib Ahmed.

The last sessions for the elections and voting process are being held on Wednesday, Jan. 30 and Thursday, Jan 31 at 3 p.m. at the MMC campus in the Graham Center Room 150. The sessions also give students an opportunity to learn about the SGA internship program.

In the previous sessions, Ahmed spoke about the councils located in the I-75 campus, at MMC, and the University’s Engineering Center.

The council members in attendance spoke about the way SGC-MMC is structured and what is required to be a part of SGC-MMC as well as what they’re looking for in new candidates.

“Transparency is something very huge for us this year,” said Ahmed to Student Media.

While looking for better voter turnout, SGC-MMC members are looking for different colleges and engineering students to coordinate events with them to promote the elections as well as host them within their departments, according to Ahmed.

Applications will open Friday, Feb. 1, and SGC-MMC will be holding mandatory informational sessions for any applicants in the weeks following.

These meetings will be taking place on Feb. 4, Feb. 6, Feb. 18 and Feb. 20 in GC 150.

Polling locations will be posted online on Monday, March 25 and voting will begin on Tuesday, April 2 at 8 a.m. through Wednesday, April 3 until 11:59 p.m. Official results will be announced online on Monday, April 8 at noon.
