FIU women’s basketball had their season opener Tuesday night at home and took a tough loss against Florida Gulf Coast University.

FGCU dominated the Panthers in perimeter shooting and turnovers. Eagles’ forward Nasrin Ulel went 4-8 from the three point line and finished with 18 points. The Eagles ended the game shooting 48% from the field with the Panthers shooting a low 40%.

FIU’s points mostly came from free throws and put backs. They struggled from the three-point line only shooting 25% on the game.. FIU’s center Chelsea Guimaraes grabbed 11 rebounds and scored on a few putback opportunities.

FIU turned the ball over 20 times to the Eagles in the first half. The Eagles had 11 steals and we all over the Panthers for four quarters.

This was not the start head coach Tiara Malcom hoped for to start the season. Coming off a 5-24 record last season, a 100-54 loss to the Eagles doesn’t set the tone for the rest of the year.

The Panthers will hope to be more competitive as they travel to Atlanta to face the Georgia State Panthers Monday, Nov. 11th at 1 p.m.

Players and coaches were unavailable for media post-game
