This year’s elections saw far fewer candidates than previous years’: 15 senate seats had no applicants and will be vacant following this year’s elections.
Candidates for the executive ticket, BBC governor, and 22 senate seats ran uncontested — over 70% of the 35 positions with applicants.
The only contested positions were Engineering and Computing Senator, where seven candidates ran for four seats, School of International and Public Affairs Senator, where eight candidates ran for three seats, and MMC Housing Senator, where four candidates ran for three seats.
This comes months after the merger between the student government councils at FIU’s Modesto Maidique Campus and Biscayne Bay Campus, which restructured SGA, eliminating some positions and creating others.
The merger was in response to high numbers of vacant SGA positions at BBC, and according to its proponents was intended to make SGA operate more efficiently.
This year, four out of seven positions housed at the BBC campus had no applicants. But unlike last year, many of the positions at MMC will also be vacant.
To fill the vacant seats, SGA’s senate will most likely appoint student applicants in the summer or fall 2021 terms.
This year, the only political party registered was The Future is You, which has been in power for the past two years. Of the senate candidates, 28 were affiliated with the party and 13 ran as independent candidates.
This year’s elections were relatively tame compared to last year’s, which saw numerous elections code violations and accusations hurled between candidates, parties, and students.
Only one elections code violation writ was filed, in which the elections board banned SIPA senator candidate Luis Moros from campaigning for 48 hours. Moros had promoted his candidacy through SGA’s Instagram account, violating two provisions of the election code that prohibit candidates from using SGA property or resources to promote their campaigns.
SGA elections were held virtually on March 30 and 31.
